This is an old mago with a very unusual painted design, we've seen only one other such example which was collected by Charles Kurtze in 1952 (see lot 236, Sothebys Contemporary and Aboriginal Art, 1995). This instrument is of the same vintage and geographic region, and most likely to be of the same hand.

An old and well-made mago with a slightly tapering bore providing good backpressure. Acoustics are strong and well-balanced. The bottom part of the instrument looks to be painted with an esoteric flying fox design.

Natural bore throughout, ochre painted, no air leaks, comfortable size mouthpiece with no wax needed, this is a nice old instrument immediately different to today's commercial offerings.

Burduwal has taken mago crafting to new heights with this bedazzling stick. Playing in big bold beautiful 'D', this is a creme-de-la-creme mago with class written all over it.

A voluminous conical bore provides rich powerful acoustics, nicely balanced in every way. There is a thumping bass inflection evident in tongued accents. The ochre-painted design comes straight off the chest of dancers in Blanasi's dance group in the 1960s/70s era.

On offer is a super-responsive yidaki made and painted by multiple Telstra Art Award winner, Naminapu Maymuru. Energy transmission from lips to instrument is stunning, the result is an instrument that almost plays by itself... all you have to do is supply the slightest breath. The bore configuration is nicely conical giving concentrated power and effortless back pressure. And the interval between fundamental and ovetone note - it doesn't get any better than F# and F#! Naminapu doesn't produce many instruments, her area of expertise is in bark paintings and hollow log coffins. A choice yidaki for the aficionado.
